Skills training

Back to Get Cycling

Summer 2020 Update

Our cycle training is back up and running after being temporarily postponed due to COVID-19.  We are currently offering lessons for Learn to Ride and Adult/Family Bikeability Level 2.  Anyone can complete these courses, adults who wish to learn to ride a bike are greatly welcomed, in fact we have more adults on the course than children!  The cost of this course is £10 per person and is delivered on a 1-1 basis.

The family and adult Bikeability level 2 course is also super popular.  Again, anyone is welcome to complete this course and teaches you how to cycle on quiet roads and Redways.  This course is £5 per person.

Check out the Events page to find the next course or get in touch with us to express your interest.

Cycling skills and training courses

In Milton Keynes we offer a range of cycling related skills and training courses to increase cycling knowledge and boost the confidence of people who cycle, no matter what their current experience is.

Courses may be offered directly by the council or organised by a third party. Our Events page contains more information about cycling activities taking place in MK and our Bikeability page provides information about all of the courses on offer.

Bikeability Cycle Training

Bikeability is a cycle training programme that teaches adults and children the practical skills they need to ride their bikes.

There are 3 levels of Bikeability, each designed to progressively improve cycling skills from the very basics of balance and control through to riding independently on busy roads, and a number of Bikeability Plus courses, which have been designed to break down the barriers that may prevent people from cycling.

Bikeability cycle training is a great way to boost your confidence on a bike, have fun, learn about road safety and improve your ability to perceive and respond to modern day traffic situations.

With an increase in child and adult obesity in recent years, cycling is a great form of exercise that can be squeezed into everyday life by riding to school or work or the local shops. For many young people, it can be their first step towards independent travel.

By providing the skills you need to enjoy cycling and ride more safely it opens up a world of opportunities to get out and ride with friends and family. Your can also explore the local area on the huge network of leisure routes and Redways in Milton Keynes.

“One of the most important days of my life, was when I learned to ride a bicycle.”

Michael Palin

How does Bikeability work in Milton Keynes?

Milton Keynes Councils cycling team employ a handful of qualified Bikeability Instructors who deliver our training courses.

Most of our Bikeability Cycle Training is delivered within schools. However, lessons are available outside of school for anyone who wants to improve their cycling skills.

What is available?

How much does it cost?

The Department for Transport makes a grant contribution towards the cost of Bikeability in England. However, this doesn’t completely cover the cost of delivering courses across Milton Keynes.  We currently offer training for free, but from 1st April 2019 there will be a nominal charge for all Bikeability training, which equates to around £5 – £10 per person per course. Find more information about the courses and charges by clicking on the links above.
