Cycling skills and training courses
In Milton Keynes we offer a range of cycling related skills and training courses to increase cycling knowledge and boost the confidence of people who cycle, no matter what their current experience is.
Courses may be offered directly by the council or organised by a third party. Our Events page contains more information about cycling activities taking place in MK and our Bikeability page provides information about all of the courses on offer.
Bikeability Cycle Training
Bikeability is a cycle training programme that teaches adults and children the practical skills they need to ride their bikes.
There are 3 levels of Bikeability, each designed to progressively improve cycling skills from the very basics of balance and control through to riding independently on busy roads, and a number of Bikeability Plus courses, which have been designed to break down the barriers that may prevent people from cycling.
Bikeability cycle training is a great way to boost your confidence on a bike, have fun, learn about road safety and improve your ability to perceive and respond to modern day traffic situations.
With an increase in child and adult obesity in recent years, cycling is a great form of exercise that can be squeezed into everyday life by riding to school or work or the local shops. For many young people, it can be their first step towards independent travel.
By providing the skills you need to enjoy cycling and ride more safely it opens up a world of opportunities to get out and ride with friends and family. Your can also explore the local area on the huge network of leisure routes and Redways in Milton Keynes.
“One of the most important days of my life, was when I learned to ride a bicycle.”
How does Bikeability work in Milton Keynes?
Milton Keynes Councils cycling team employ a handful of qualified Bikeability Instructors who deliver our training courses.
Most of our Bikeability Cycle Training is delivered within schools. However, lessons are available outside of school for anyone who wants to improve their cycling skills.
What is available?
- Bikeability and Bikeability Plus – a range of cycle training modules from balance bikes up to secondary school, plus rides and bike maintenance.
- Bikeability for Schools – most of our courses are offered through schools, so here’s everything you need to know.
- Bikeability for Adults/Families – courses generally take place evenings or weekends for adults and families.
How much does it cost?
The Department for Transport makes a grant contribution towards the cost of Bikeability in England. However, this doesn’t completely cover the cost of delivering courses across Milton Keynes. We currently offer training for free, but from 1st April 2019 there will be a nominal charge for all Bikeability training, which equates to around £5 – £10 per person per course.
