Milton Keynes is one of the fastest growing UK cities
Rapid growth puts a lot of pressure on our infrastructure and services and whilst it is important that growth is supported, it is equally important to forward plan for that growth and to manage it smart and sustainably.
MK:Smart was a large collaborative initiative which is developing innovative solutions to support the economic growth of Milton Keynes. The MK:Smart project concluded in June 2017, however City Labs is an exciting follow up initiative.
Central to the project was the creation of a state-of-the-art ‘MK Data Hub’ which supported the collection and management of vast amounts of data relevant to city systems from a variety of data sources. These included data about energy and water consumption, transport data, movement across the city, data acquired through satellite technology, social and economic datasets, and crowdsourced data from social media or specialised apps.
Other elements of the project that fed in to the MK Data Hub included transport – supporting initiatives to address transport problems caused by rapid population growth and citizen – harnessing local information and views to help make Milton Keynes a smarter, greener city through engagement activities and the creation of an ideation platform Our MK.
In the Smart Cities Awards 2017, Milton Keynes is especially proud to have won in two categories: communications and data.
